Spotlight: Feed the Need Food Drive Exceeds Goal in 2011 Creighton University Medical Center employees, physicians and residents set out to raise the bar during the eighth annual Feed the Need food drive. Exceeding the goal, over 35,100 pounds of food were raised and donated to the Siena-Francis House. People First: Recognizing Outstanding CUMC Employees Lisa Paulson and Tammy Johnston named employee of the month. Leader’s Voice: Get Ready for IMPACT: Improving Patient Care Through Technology We are embarking on a 15-month initiative to improve patient care through technology (IMPACT). IMPACT includes two rounds of computerizing our patient charts and order entry. This effort sets the foundation for exchanging patient information across community healthcare providers to improve patient care. Patient Focus: Cafeteria Renovation to Include Subway, New Menu Options and More! Creighton University Medical Center will embark on another renovation project in 2012 to improve patient and visitor satisfaction. However this time the focus will be on one of the main common areas used by patients and visitors- the cafeteria.

Spotlight: Physicians Health Clinic Keystone Open House Dec. 28. 29 and 30 Join us for an open house Dec. 28, 29 and 30 at the new Physicians Health Clinic location in Keystone Landing. People First: Electronic W2 Form As part of our ongoing efforts to “go green,” beginning December 1, Tenet will offer employees the option to receive their W-2s electronically, eliminating the need for paper copies. Patient Focus: Creighton University Creighton-led Hernia Team Reaches Milestone of 1,000 Patients in DRA Creighton-led medical team participating in its ninth annual trip to the Dominican Republic to repair hernias reached a special milestone on Nov. 8, when it completed its 1,000th patient surgery.

Spotlight: Physicians Health Clinic Keystone Location Now Open! Creighton University Medical Center is excited to announce the opening of a second Physicians Health Clinic location at 90th and Boyd in the Keystone area. It is conveniently located right in the Keystone neighborhood. People First: Creighton University Medical Center Recognizes Employees for Service Creighton University Medical Center honored employees for their years of service, on October 28, at the annual Employee Recognition Dinner held at the downtown Hilton. Leader’s Voice: Give Thanks, Feed the Need This time of year we are reminded of everything we have to be thankful for. As we give thanks we are reminded of those in need. Continuing with our annual tradition we will once again embark on the challenge to “Feed the Need” in our community by collecting food for the Siena Francis House. Patient Focus: Creighton University Medical Center Protects Patients and Employees Through Flu Vaccination Creighton University Medical Center implemented a mandatory flu vaccination policy in 2010 to help protect employees and reduce the likelihood that patients or individuals served would be exposed to the flu.

Spotlight: Second Physicians Health Clinic Location to Open Nov. 1 Creighton University Medical Center is excited to announce the opening of a second Physicians Health Clinic location at 90th and Boyd in the Keystone area. It is conveniently located right in the Keystone neighborhood. People First: Kathy Zaloudek, Nurse Turned Artist Kathy Zaloudek saw an email soliciting proposals for a mural in the 1M hallway one day that sparked her interest. A little over a month later this nurse turned artist celebrated with fellow co-workers as she explained the thought that went into the project. Leader’s Voice: Creighton Welcomes Timothy Lannon as 24th President A Creighton University welcomed Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. as the 24th President of Creighton University during an inauguration ceremony held Sept. 30. Patient Focus: Creighton University Medical Center Leads Among Academic Medical Centers in Reducing Readmission Rates and Primary Care Follow-Up Creighton University Medical Center is a leader among academic medical centers in reducing readmission rates and scheduling primary- care follow-up appointments after being discharged from the hospital, according to a study recently released by the Dartmouth Atlas Project.

Spotlight: Orthopedic Neurology Unit to Open End of September Creighton University Medical Center will open an 18 bed, orthopedic neurology unit this month. Located on the fifth floor of the hospital the new unit will be dedicated to caring for orthopedic and neurology patients. People First: Employees Pulled Together to Raise Money for Those Affected by Flooding Creighton University Medical Center employees held a bake sale in August to raise money for those affected by flooding. Employees pulled together to raise over $600 through the bake sale and donations. Leader’s Voice: Patient Disclosure and Visitors A message from the compliance officer about patient disclosure when visitors are present. Patient Focus: Taking Customer Service to the Next Level Creighton University Medical Center is introducing a new program, AIDET, to take customer service to the next level.

Spotlight: Women’s Services Marketing Campaign Timed with the remodel of the Birth Center Creighton University Medical Center will be launching a Women’s Services marketing campaign the beginning of September. Leader’s Voice: Gifts and Entertainment, A Message from the Hospital Compliance Officer Our culture is much attuned to the giving and receiving of gifts to celebrate events such as birthday, anniversaries and various holidays throughout the year. We can also customarily find ourselves to be the giver or recipient of gifts as an act of kindness, thanks, or recognition of a job well-done. While the tradition of gift giving and receiving is very much a part of our society as a whole, in healthcare the act of gift-giving and receiving is subject to limitations. People First: Recognizing Outstanding Employees and Managers Mindy Bosanek was named manager of the 2nd Quarter and Ken Nesbitt, Sarah Long and Christine Wright were named employee of the month read more to learn why these outstanding employees were recognized. Patient Focus: Creighton University Medical Center, Children’s Hospital & Medical Center Form Pediatric Critical Care Partnership A new partnership agreement between Creighton University Medical Center (CUMC) and Children’s Hospital & Medical Center will enhance the delivery of pediatric critical care. The partnership, already in effect, is specific to pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) patient care.

Spotlight: Creighton Cardiac Center Celebrates 50th Anniversary The Cardiac Center at Creighton University Medical Center will celebrate a significant milestone in July- its 50th anniversary. Leader’s Voice: BCBSNE Collaborating with Area Hospitals to Improve Surgical Outcomes Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) recently contributed $35,000 each to Creighton University Medical Center (CUMC) and Methodist Hospital in support of a program designed to improve surgical outcomes. People First: Creighton University Medical Center Implements Everbridge Emergency Notification System Creighton University Medical Center recently activated, Everbridge, an emergency notification system used to communicate with employees during emergency situations. Patient Focus: Creighton University Medical Center Offers New ER Service Powered by InQuickER Creighton University Medical Center will be introducing InQuickER, an emergency room service that facilitates patient satisfaction by allowing consumers to hold a place at the ER online, while waiting in the comfort of their own homes.

Spotlight: Creighton University Medical Center Wins Heart Walk Fundraising Award Creighton University Medical Center won the Top Fundraising Medical Institution trophy for raising over $32,000 for the American Heart Association Start! Heart Walk. Leaders Voice: New Policy Storage System, Lucidoc I’m excited to announce the addition of a new web based policy storage system, Lucidoc. People First: Novotny Named Manager of the Quarter Ann Novotny, Director of Materials Management was named manager of the Quarter for first quarter of 2011. Patient Focus: New Scrub Colors by Discipline New scrub colors by discipline will be implemented effective June 20. The goal of the uniform scrub colors is to help our inpatients recognize staff and caregivers they see during their stay at Creighton University Medical Center. Nurses Week will lead into National Hospital Week May 9-13, 2011. No matter what your role is at the hospital – from admissions to the patient care areas – you are working toward our mission of the prevention of illness, the restoration and improvement of health, and the compassionate care of the suffering. Spotlight: Mobile Application Now Available for Creighton University Medical Center Creighton University Medical Center launched a mobile application to further connect the hospital to community members and increase access to health-related information. The mobile application, powered by WorldLink, is available as a free download for iPhone™, iPad™, and Android™ products. As April begins we are also reminded we are already three months into a new benefits year with a new medical insurance carrier, United Health. Spotlight: Physicians Health Clinic – Convenient Care for Employees Physicians Health Clinic, a Creighton University Medical Center affiliated clinic, opened a new primary care clinic at 24th and Vinton in Omaha this year. Leader’s Voice: 2011 General Ethics and Compliance Refresher Training The 2011 Ethics and Compliance Refresher Training sessions, “Trust on the Horizon,” will only be held during the month of April 2011. All Creighton University Medical Center employees must attend one of the mandatory sessions in April. People First: Newell Inducted into International Association of Nurses Hilda Newell was inducted into the International Association of Nurses (IAN) as a Worldwide Leader in Healthcare for 2011. New Comfort Care Order Set A Comfort Care Order Set was recently initiated at Creighton University Medical Center. The Comfort Cares Order Set was developed to enable physicians and nurses to meet the needs of the patient requiring comfort care with an organized approach.

Spotlight: State of the Art Equipment Added in Surgery and Radiation Oncology Creighton University Medical Center recently added a new da Vinci Si robot to the OR and new equipment in Radiation Oncology including a new CT Scanner, Planning System and Linear Accelerator. Leader’s Voice: Governor Makes Visit to Creighton University Medical Center Governor Dave Heineman visited our hospital on Feb. 16 to learn more about Creighton University Medical Center’s benefit and support within our community. People First: New Team Members Added to Business Development Three new team members were recently added to the Business Development team - Heidi Tast, Lee Anne Caruso and Monica Robinson. Patient Focus: Benchmarks Set for Maintaining Patient Satisfaction for Pain Management To meet pain reassessment Joint Commission standards our policy states a pain reassessment score must be documented within 75 minutes after administering a pain medication.

Spotlight: Operating Room 12 Remodeled as Minimally Invasive Suite Creighton University Medical Center is excited to announce the completion of operating room 12 which was converted from a standard surgery suite to a minimally invasive surgery suite. Leader’s Voice: Lannon to Become 24th President at Creighton University Father Lannon will become Creighton’s 24th president on July 1, 2011. He will succeed the Rev. John. P. Schlegel, S. J., who will step down after 11 years as president. People First: Robinson Named October Employee of the Month Monica Robinson, patient advocate for Conifer Health Solutions was named the October 2010 employee of the month. Spotlight: CUMC Launches Sinuplasty Campaign Chronic sinusitis, an inflammation of the sinus lining, is one of the most commonly diagnosed chronic illnesses. Creighton University Medical Center will launch a marketing campaign targeting sinus sufferers in September to help them “Breathe Easy.” Leader’s Voice: CUMC Completes Phase One of the Patient Room Renovation Project I am excited to announce the completion of the first of our patient care areas to be renovated, meeting the health care needs of our patients. The newly renovated cardiac care unit, located on the fourth floor (4100), will reopen on August 27. People First: July and August Employee of the Month Karen Kealy, patient access representative in the PAC Department was selected as the July Employee of the Month. Ed Mentzer, lead security officer, was selected as August Employee of the Month. Patient Focus: Parking Lot Safety and Security Features Added at Creighton University Medical Center New emergency assistance phones have been placed in parking areas to provide better safety and security for patients, visitors and employees!
